Intermountain Healthcare/SAMHSA

Every month, 24 people die of an opioid overdose in Utah, so Intermountain Healthcare needed a way to reduce opioid prescriptions in its hospitals.

Our solution was a three-story-high entranceway chandelier made entirely of prescription pill bottles, plus messages about effective opioid alternatives throughout the hospital. By getting patients to think about opioid addiction moments before meeting with their doctors, they were ready to accept alternative pain medications. The chandelier and signage were so effective (reducing prescribed opioids by more than 40 percent) that Intermountain Healthcare is currently installing them in all of its hospitals, system-wide.
